Caring for Dentures in Odessa
October 28, 2016
You’ve just received new dentures and you couldn’t be happier about the way your smile and face look! Dr. Cobb prefers cosmetic dentures that not only replace missing teeth, but are designed to more accurately fit your jawbone in order to support facial muscles. This helps you avoid avoid the sagging appearance that gradually affects many denture-wearers. To ensure the beauty and longevity of your new smile, Dr. Cobb and his team offer a few tips on how you can best care for your dentures.
Rinse and Go
After each meal, be sure to rinse your dentures in clear running water. You don’t want to have particles of food in your teeth or debris trapped between your dentures and gum. Don’t shake off the water—this only increases the chance that you’ll drop the dentures and cause damage.
Brush Everyday
You should plan on brushing your dentures at least once a day. Bits of food and plaque can accumulate on false teeth as easily as on natural teeth. Be sure to use a soft denture brush and a nonabrasive denture cleaner. Most toothpaste contains micro-particles that are slightly abrasive in order to remove stains from natural teeth. However, this same toothpaste that polishes your teeth can scratch the finish on your dentures. Also, if you use a denture adhesive to secure your dentures, be sure to clean the base well where the dentures rest on your gums.
Not at Night
Do not wear your dentures at night while you are sleeping. Your gums need time to rest and be bathed in saliva. Soak your dentures in water overnight or in a mild dental soaking solution.
Avoid Warm Air and Hot Water
Warm dry air is the enemy of dentures. Never allow your dentures to dry out because this can cause warping, which is why dentures must be left in water overnight.
Similarly, hot water is no friend of dentures. This too can warp your custom crafted oral prosthetic. Only use cool or lukewarm water to rinse or wash dentures.
Ban the Bleach
Do not soak or clean your dentures in a bleach solution. This can weaken your dentures and may eventually alter their color.
